Volunteers Open Day

An opportunity to pop in, meet our friendly team and find out about our volunteer roles. Full training is given if you decided to join the Museum of the Broads family.

Spring Trail ~ Secret Signals!
Saturday 21st March – Sunday 12th April 2026
10am – 4pm
Free with museum admission.
In this family-friendly trail, explore the museum to discover 12 hidden messages. Have a go at mirror writing and morse code and discover how the birds, the trees and the bees talk to each other. Decipher the message told in nautical flags and claim a prize.
Crafts by the River ~ Suffolk Puffs!
Saturday 18th April
10am – 4pm
Free with museum admission.
Dating back to the early 1600’s these simple textiles were made using scraps of fabric to embellish quilts and clothing.
Meet textile artist, Jo Couldrey and have a go at making your own Suffolk Puff in the form of a fabric brooch, also known as a ‘yo-yo’.
Crafts and Curiosities

Free with museum admission.
Meet local makers in this pop-up market of crafts and collectables and explore the museum to discover more about what life was like for those who lived and worked in the Broads.

Model Boat Day

Free ith museum admission.
Find out about the history of boating on the Broads in our new display and cinema. Meet model boat owners and have a go at crafting your own craft. Yachts! Cruisers! Fishing boast! Whatever floats your boat, you are bound to find it here.
The Coot Club Returns!
Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June
10am – 4pm
Free with museum admission.
The Arthur Ransome Society brings the story of ‘The Coot Club!’ back to the Norfolk Broads where it all began in this nostalgic tribute to the author, the story and its characters. Take a trip on our electric boat, Marsh Harrier or steam launch, Falcon and look out for coots and kingfishers*

Crafts by the River ~ Rag-rugs!/ Drop-in Workshop

Free with museum admission.
Rag-rugs became popular during the 19th Century. As well as being an ingenious way to recycle clothing, they also reflected the family’s history. Meet a ‘Marshman’s wife’ and discover how to may your own Rag-rug.
The Seasiders do the Broads!
Tuesday 11th July

Free with museum admission.
This popular ukelele band from Winterton-On-Sea bring their music and songs to the Broads. Refreshments are available from the museum shop or bring a picnic and join the Seasiders by the river.
WHERRY WEEK
Steam & Sail!

Discover the stories of the Wherryman, Marshmen and Mill Keepers whose livelihoods depended on the Broads. Follow in their foootsteps by taking a trip on our steam launch, Falcon or electric boat, Marsh Harrier and then ‘jump ship’ aboard a Wherry to Barton Broad.
All Aboard a Wherry!

Visit the museum to find out about the history of Trading Wherries on the Broads. View models of this iconic barge and sit inside a replica Wherry Cuddy.
Take a step back in time aboard a visiting Wherry to discover what life was like for a Wherryman and his family.
Crafts by the River ~ 'Crafty' Mouse!

A mouse represents good luck and prosperity and features in the work of furniture maker, Robert Thompson. Textile artist Jo Couldrey shows you how to fashion your own equally charming mouse out of fabric.

Before mechanisation, hand looms were used to make textiles. Today ‘Wild Weaving’ using foraged plants is a popular art form. Join Jo Couldrey, a textile artist inspired by nature.
The Punch House Band
Saturday 15th August

Locally sourced folk tales of blood, bone and boats. The Punch House Band present entertaining folk music with an East Anglian twist. Expect high energy, laughter, ghost tales and maybe a sing-a-long.
Barton Regatta ~ A Celebration of Classic Boats
Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August

Take one of our launches to visit the iconic Barton Regatta. Experience the majestic beauty of sailing boats and vintage craft during a one hour round trip from the museum to Barton Broad.
