'Very interesting for the children as well!'   'I want to come again, it was fun.'
The Museum was founded to fulfill the vision to educate and inform visitors about the Broads' social history and people's interaction with this unique environment.

The Museum's Education Officer is a recently retired local teacher who can advise visiting teachers. If you are interested in bringing a group of school age children, please see our Teaching Resources page.

Many volunteers have specialist knowledge of boat-building, wherries, crafts and tools and are able to talk to visitors and answer their questions. Members of our volunteer Documentation Team are often willing to help research the history of boats or other Broadland topics.  Please contact the Curator.

These services are available at present:
  • Talks to interested groups at the Museum during opening times, by prior arrangement.
  • We have 4 'Explorer Packs' for use by younger visitors in the Museum.  They contain binoculars, a magnifying glass, a magnifier, a tape measure and a magnet.  'Companion Teddy Bears' are available for the very young.
  • Children can dress up as a Marshman or Marshwoman or a Victorian Lady or Gentleman.
  • Talks, slideshows and presentations to groups in their own venues. These include on the History of the Broads, the Museum and its Collections, Wherries and River Transport.
  • Free 'pre-visits' for teachers at the Museum.
  • Teachers' Inset at the Museum.
  • Education packs for schools.  Please see our Teaching Resources page.
  • Handling materials and art materials for children on a Museum visit.
  • On site talks to school and college groups.
  • Riverside picnic area, and covered picnic area.
  • A range of Broads related archive material for individual research.

  • A video presentation showing the brief history of the Broads.
  • Touchscreens showing photos from the Museum's Archive and a Boat Plan computer showing a selection of boat plans in the Museum's collection.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To encourage greater understanding of the Broads area and how the area has shaped the lives and livelihoods of the people
  • To enable visitors to understand the economic importance of the Broads and the growth of tourism and its consequences.
  • To provide an education facility that will encourage the use of Broadland as a valuable teaching resource.
  • To provide a centre for the benefit of teachers and all those involved in Education.
  • To provide a centre where academic research can be undertaken, based on the Museum's archives, artefacts and records. This will include searches of the Museum's electronic catalogue.
  • To provide a centre where some of the National Curriculum Schemes of Work and Objectives can be studied first hand.
  • To provide handling materials, where appropriate, to encourage hands-on learning.
  • To provide outreach talks and exhibitions for people who may not be able, through economic or physical reasons, to access the Museum.
