The Heritage Open Days always provide plenty of food for thought, but here at the Museum, you can buy cakes from Monica and sandwiches from Peggy's Pop Up Cafe!  We'll also be selling the usual drinks, crisps, ice creams, flapjacks and chocolate.  So you can spend the whole day here and not get hungry!

Come and view the Wherry Yacht, Norada.  Take a river trip on our steam boat, Falcon (charges apply).

Vikings come to Stalham Again!

PictureFalcon, Viking Long Ship!
1,000 years after Dane Law finished in Norfolk, yesterday, Sun 13 August, the Museum was invaded by Danes going A Viking!

The Museum hosted the re-enactment group, Dragonshield, who entertained our visitors with superb displays of sword, axe and shield defence.

Sam and Gemma trained young Viking warriors in the art of evading wet sponges with shields and taught them to wear battledress, and roar!

Pamela and Jenny painted many faces (including mine, but no photos!!) and Anne, Robin and Grace helped to make Viking inspired brooches out of copper.

And, best of all, thanks to Dave F and the crew, we had our very own, unique, steam powered Viking Long Ship!

Watch out for next August...

Falcon is a TV Star!

Yesterday, Sat 15 July, was a new experience!  I spent 3 hours on board Falcon chatting to Timothy West and Prunella Scales (Tim and Pru) about early Broads Tourism for their Great Canal Journeys programme. They were such lovely people and true professionals.  I was a bit phased having to do everything up to 4 times for different cameras, but they were totally happy, even when it started to spit with rain.  We wish them a lovely summer break now the filming has finished.  Perhaps they may even come to Norfolk again - this was their first time ever on the Broads!

Falcon was an absolute star.  She's had a couple of difficult weeks and our volunteer crew have worked long hours to get her running again.  It was all worth it!  Thank you to many, but especially Bruce, Trevor, Roger, Will, Dave, Martin and Glenn for helping out before and on the day.

The crew of Spun Gold TV were happy with the results and so watch this space!  They'll let us know when it will be on our screens.

Our wonderful collared dove parents have done it again!  Their 2 babies have now flown the nest and Dora is sitting again.  Can she beat her 2016 record of 3 broods?  All this proves just how family friendly the Museum  is!

Follow our Half Term Hallowe'en Trail, find the Hallowe'en characters hiding in the Museum, and dodge the Wroxham Witch and the Museum ghosts.  Activities and prizes for children.  Take a trip on our steam boat, Falcon, (Tues, Wed and Thurs) and enter into the Spirit of the Season!

And we really do have ghosts.  A Crusader and his Moor opponent fight each August at Stalham Staithe.  Have you ever seen them?

Kill or Cure?

On Wed 24 August, our Victorian Pharmacist visited the Museum.  He set up shop in the Broadland's High Streets Through Time exhibition.  Various apprentices helped to measure and prescribe different remedies for ailments such as cholera, typhoid, being peaky and being a bit thin.  Did you know that ingredients included herbs, opium, and creosote?  Great fun for all!

Thanks to Mark Taylor of Timetrippers and to Museums Norfolk.
