The Museum of the Broads

About Us

The Museum of the Broads is a registered charity which aims to bring the history of the Broads alive for locals and visitors to Norfolk.

It is open to the public throughout the summer.

It is a nationally registered museum run by volunteers who welcome visitors and give them a taste of Broads' heritage as well as conserving and restoring objects, including boats, which tell a local story.

The Museum of the Broads exists to bring to life the heritage of the Broadland waterways with imaginative interactive display areas focussing on regional history. It is concerned with the preservation and interpretation of the history of the Broads - a singular area of our country with its unique history of discovery, development and exploitation of the natural environment.

The displays represent life in the area from today's conservation industry, back through the tourist industry of the twentieth century with its rapid development of the region, through the period when the need for fuel and food drastically shaped the landscape, remembering early settlements when East Anglia was an important capital region.

****New for 2010.****
Thanks to a grant from The Norfolk & Suffolk Broads Charitable trust, your Museum experience can be heard as well as seen. There are now audio handsets available which give a mix of anecdotes, poems or informative commentary for various points around the Museum.
Each point is denoted by an "Audio Point" sign which will show the appropriate number on the commentary.
The voices are are mainly those of volunteers at the Museum, also our thanks to Keith Skipper for his recording of a "Boy John" letter. These bring the items to life or give greater details about them, to enhance your tour. There is no extra charge for the audio tour.
The museum's collection includes objects which graphically represent the struggle to exploit the wealth of the land, and the use of the waterways for food, transport and leisure.
There are collections of boats, brochures, sailing diaries, and boatbuilding plans. Many of the Museum's Broads boats , tools, and associated artefacts are unique

The Museum moved to Stalham in 2000, and encourages local people to participate as volunteers, committee members, Friends of the museum and regular visitors. WINNER OF "THE BEST SMALL WATERBASED ATTRACTION" 2008 in The EDP Tourism Awrds
